ある夜、脅威的な致死量と感染力を誇るインフルエンザウ ィルスが、細菌兵器を開発するアメリカの軍事機関から漏 れ出した。それを察知した男は、直ちに妻と子供を叩き起 こし、逃走を試みた。しかし、空しくも途上で力つき、車 はガソリンスタンドの縁石に乗り上げてしまう。 余談ですが、この小説が日本で出版されてからしばらくし て、実際にアメリカで炭疽菌騒動が起こり、全米全土を震 撼させました。
